For those of you donating blood tomorrow, it is extremely important that you try to keep up your iron levels. There are so many types of food out there that are super delicious and are also iron rich. Some include:

  • Red meat
  • Egg yolks
  • Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards)
  • Dried fruit (prunes, raisins)
  • Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels)
  • Mollusks (oysters, clams, scallops)
  • Turkey or chicken giblets
  • Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans
  • Liver
  • Artichokes

Eat a big breakfast before you go to donate blood and also remember to stay hydrated!

Can’t wait to see you at the blood drive :)

Why should you donate blood?

  • 4.5 million Americans need blood transfusions each year.
  • Someone needs blood every 2 seconds.
  • 43,000 pints of donated blood are used each day in the US and Canada.
  • About 1 in 7 people entering a hospital needs blood.

All blood collected at our blood drives goes to St. Jude’s- meaning that your blood is saving somebody in your community.

Save lives and donate blood on March 23rd at Troy High School. Make sure to pick up permission slips from the blood drive table in the quad during break or lunch. Last day to turn in forms will be March 21st!

TROY HIGH SCHOOL IS HOLDING THEIR 3RD BLOOD DRIVE OF THE YEAR ON MARCH 23RD.

LDC APPLICATIONS ARE HERE!! ›

LDC stands for Leadership Development Center and is a week long camp that the American Red Cross holds every year. This year, the camp will run July 16-20, 2012 at Camp Metoche in Angelus Oaks, California.

So why would anybody want to go to LDC?

  1. Meet new people and make new friends.
  2. Learn how to become a good leader through activities that will help you gain confidence and teach you how to put yourself out there.
  3. Learn what Red Cross spirit is all about.
  4. Have fun.
  5. Make memories.
Applications are due May 1st. Turn them in to the Orange County Chapter or to a board member if you are unable to go to the chapter yourself. Hurry- you don’t want to miss out on this amazing experience!

Big MAC is HERE!

Big MAC stands for Big Measles Awareness Carnival and is an annual event held by the Orange County Chapter. For every dollar earned at Big MAC, the American Red Cross is able to vaccinate one person for measles- $1 for one life.

Interested? Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Become part of a chapter committee: The first chapter meeting will be TOMORROW, March 5th, from 4:30-6:30. Go with friends and get to meet people from all over Orange County to make a difference in the world!
  • Troy’s Game Booth: Each school creates a game booth that has something to do with “Measles Awareness”. Volunteers who are unable to travel to the chapter to volunteer on a committee can still be a part of Big MAC by helping after school to make our game booth. We will be making sign up lists for the school booth soon.

Don’t miss out on this fun event! If you are unable to volunteer on a committee or help out with the game booth, then you can at least come to the day of the event (some time in May!)

And no, it is not sponsored by McDonalds :)

Troy Red Cross Club ‘11-‘12!

Remember this? This was Troy’s Red Cross Club 2010-2011.

It is now 2011-2012. Show your Red Cross spirit and wear your club tanks on Monday 1/23. We will be taking our yearbook photo in the quad at lunch.

GO RC11-12!

What is Rock n Runway?

RnR is one of the three big events that the Orange County Chapter gets to hold every year. It’s basically a fundraiser for Red Cross in which students get to MODEL and participate in a BATTLE OF THE BANDS. All funds that are raised goes toward Red Cross’s fun and amazing summer camp, LDC!

Interested? If you would like to become a model, fill out the online form here. Models chosen will have to pay a fee of $25, but you DO get to keep the clothing that you wear, which can have a value of up to $75!

Got a band and want to show your stuff? Fill out the online form here.

Last day to submit your applications will be FEBRUARY 2ND, by 6 pm. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Don’t miss out on this awesome event! RnR will be on March 31st this year, which IS on the same day as Troy’s Sadies. However, girls, if you weren’t planning on asking a guy, then RnR would be a fun and less expensive alternative…and guys, if you don’t think that you’re going to get asked, go to RnR to strut your stuff so you can get asked NEXT YEAR :D

Check out the chapter’s blogspot post here for more details.

Have a nice 3 day weekend!

Enjoy your Monday off, but make sure to come to the Red Cross meeting on TUESDAY, JANUARY 17TH. We will be going over important upcoming events. Also, this will be your LAST DAY to pick up your Red Cross club tanks if you pre-ordered them!
